FRENCH NAVY: The sovereignty enforcer

DCNS has launched its first Gowind type offshore patrol vessel. The 87m L’Adroit is unusual in being an entirely self-funded showcase project with eleven companies supplying systems and equipment free of charge. Once the ship is completed later this year it will be loaned to the French Navy for three years, again for nothing. The initiative is calculated to pay dividends for future export sales once the vessel has been proven in an operational role. L’Adroit is the smallest of four variants in the Gowind range of OPVs and corvettes first announced in 2006. The family of ocean-going patrol vessels has been developed to be easily configured for roles such as coastal surveillance, fishery protection and anti-piracy missions. Their innovative design and capabilities include a panoramic bridge offering 360° visibility, a single enclosed mast offering all-round sensor visibility, the ability to rapidly and covertly launch fast commando boats from stern hatches and provision for unmanned aerial and surface vehicle operations.
