HEAVYLIFT: First contract for ‘O’ ship

Holland’s Dockwise has signed its first contract for use of what will be the world’s largest heavylift vessel when the company’s first $240 million O class ship is completed by South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries towards the end of next year (see SM, Sept).

Chevron has agreed to charter the massive semi-submersible for an undisclosed sum to move an oilfield platform structure from South Korea to the Gulf of Mexico. Dockwise CEO Andre Goedee said the contract with Chevron ‘is a very clear sign that this vessel will rapidly earn its place in the market and has the potential to create a new market of its own’.

The new O-class will measure 270m by 70m in size and have a load capacity of 110,000 metric tons.
