HISTORIC COASTER: Preserved Robin returns

One of the world’s most significant preserved ships, the 1890-built Robin, was welcomed back to London on 13 July by a large and distinguished gathering, which included the UK’s Shipping Minister. Robin is the only complete example of a 19th century cargo ship in existence, having her original steam engine still in place.

Robin’s return marks the end of the first stage in her restoration, which has been partly funded by the Crossrail project. With her hull fully conserved, Robin is now displayed on a floating pontoon, which will also form an exhibition space. David and Nishani Kampfner, project managers of the SS Robin Trust, are now working towards funding her internal restoration, which will see her become a museum.
