OFFICER CADETS: ‘Wishing Bell’ at Greenock

A 19th bell once used in foggy conditions to aid Clyde steamers using the Glasgow and South Western Railway’s Princes Pier has been unveiled as the latest feature of the £250,000 development of Greenock Ocean Terminal’s cruise facility, close to the bell’s original home, which is now the site of the Clydeport Container Terminal.

The bell has been given a new lease of life as a ‘wishing bell’ to raise money for the Greenock Rotary Club, with a sign encouraging cruise passengers to throw coins to raise money for the club. Prince’s Pier was the terminus of the Greenock and Ayrshire Railway, with the station building believed to have housed the bell built in 1894 by the G&SWR. The bell was unveiled in July just before 50 Tall Ships docked in Greenock as part of the Tall Ships Races 2011.
