CONTAINER PORT: New terminal opened

On 28 September the UK’s newest deepwater container terminal was formally opened at the port of Felixstowe, the UK’s largest container port. The new terminal, known as Felixstowe South, consists of Berths 8 and 9, which are the first stage in a £1 billion inward investment by the Hong Kong-based Hutchison in its UK ports.

Felixstowe currently handles 40 per cent of the UK’s container trade, which is approximately £60 billion of imports and exports. The current expansion plans could increase that figure by a further £20 billion. The new berths are dredged to a depth of 16m alongside to enable large ships to berth.
