Aground in Portland

Coastguards worked to recover the cargo vessel Westwind II from Portland Harbour after she ran aground on 17 October 2011. Portland Coastguard was alerted by Portland Port Control at 2310 after the cargo vessel dragged her anchor and ran aground on the north-east breakwater of the harbour with 11 crew members on board. No injuries were reported among the crew, and no pollution occurred while Portland Harbour Authority dispatched two tug boats to help. However, initial recovery operations had to be suspended because of buoys and mooring lines and were resumed first thing the next day.The empty vessel had no damage visible, having arrived at Portland to take on fuel prior to her next trip. However, she was detained by the MCA after she was found to have 35 deficiencies. She was built in 1985 as Tertia and is operated by X-Press Container Lines Ltd.
