BULK CARRIER: The ‘buck’ stops here

The career of the bulk carrier Tim Buck came to an end on 12 October 2012 when she made an unpublicised arrival at the ship-breaking facilities of Alang Auto and Engineering Co Pvt Ltd at Alang, in India. The bulk carrier was a product of the VEB Warnowwerft Warnemünde yard at Rostock in 1983 and enjoyed a long but fairly uneventful career.

The 15.3-knot vessel, with a deadweight of 19,240, spent her entire career under the ownership of NB Shipping Ltd, of Limassol, Cyprus. She could carry 442 containers, but she was better known for her trade in bulk coal shipping to ports such as Hull and Newport. She made many calls at Hull loaded with Russian coal for the local power stations, a service to which she was particularly suited.

A 29-year service career came to an end when, after a few days anchored off Alang, she was beached on 20 October 2012 and demolition commenced. Because of the downturn in trade, many old bulk carriers are going to the breakers. RC
