Anchor-Handler: State-of-the-art tug

The first of two new state-of-the-art anchor-handling tugs is now in service with Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC) Nederland BV, based in Rotterdam. Named Bylgia, the new tug was built by Astilleros Armon Vigo SA and delivered in July. Her sistership Kolga is nearing completion. The tugs are part of a big investment by HMC in new and more sophisticated offshore construction plant and will replace the ageing and well-known anchor-handlers Husky and Retriever.

Bylgia and her sister are capable of worldwide operation, carrying out long distance towing and operating economically while working ‘on-site’. The new tugs measure 72m by 18m, having a depth of 8.50m and an operating draft of between 5.75m and 7.75m. They are similar in design to a modern offshore anchor-handling tug, with a long forecastle, two decks and heavy fendering. JG
