New ferry: Christened with a coconut

Traditional champagne was eschewed for a coconut when the Dredging Corporation of India’s DCI Dredge XXI was launched by Holland’s IHC Merwede yard last year. The 114m by 21.3m vessel was delivered in October 2013 after having been fitted out with her complete assembly of dredging equipment at IHC’s Kinderdijk facility.

With a capacity for 5,500m³ of spoils, the trailing suction hopper dredger (pictured), the third in a series of three built by IHC for the Dredging Corporation of India, is expected to spend most of her time on India’s silt-prone Hooghly river in company with the already delivered DCI Dredge XIX and DCI Dredge XX.
