CONTAINER SHIPS: Maersk orders tankers

Denmark’s Maersk Tankers, which sold its large gas carriers to the BW Group in May 2013, and its small gas tankers to Navigator Gas in 2012, has ordered four MR product tankers from South Korea’s Sungdong Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering as it focusses its efforts on the long-haul and mid-range product tanker market.

The company, which currently operates over 160 ships, is expected to order further newbuildings as it expands its fleet of crude oil carriers and product tankers and begins replacing older tonnage. At the start of this year it become part of a new Maersk division – Services & Other Shipping– which also includes Damco, Maersk Supply Service and Svitzer. JS
