NEWBUILD Ready for all weathers

Japanese shipbuilder Kawasaki Heavy Industries has been contracted to build a 169m by 28m all-weather subsea construction vessel for Norway’s Island Offshore to a Rolls-Royce UT 777 design. Due for delivery in 2017, the newbuilding will be outfitted for subsea construction, inspection, maintenance and repair duties, including tophole drilling and light well intervention work.

To protect workers from the elements, the design will feature a partially covered main deck, a fully covered moonpool, and an enclosed drilling/intervention tower. Rolls-Royce will provide the integrated design and engineering package for the ship, as well as major systems and deck equipment. The propulsion system, also by Rolls-Royce, will make use of six diesel/generator sets powering seven electrically-driven thrusters. JS
