Shipyard news: Turkish delight

Turkey has become Europe’s biggest shipbuilder, and the ships it has been building have become increasingly sophisticated. Recently completed by the Tersan Shipyard in Istanbul for Germany’s Gesellschaft für Öltransporte mbH (GEFO) is the 6,336dwt chemical tanker Fidelio, which recently completed her maiden voyage from Israel to the Netherlands via France. Considered a ‘duplex’ stainless steel chemical tanker, the vessel can transport 260 types of cargo, from vegetable oil to sulphuric acid.

She is powered by a MAN Diesel & Turbo propulsion system comprising a 7L32/44CR engine, Renk gears and an Alpha Mark 5 adjustable CP propeller. This combination boosts the drive system’s efficiency by up to nine per cent, thus saving fuel and operating costs while reducing emissions. Two sisterships, Othello and Traviata, are set to be delivered by Tersan before the end of this year. JS
