Wightlink changes hands

Wightlink Ferries has been sold for an undisclosed sum to Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Partners after ten years in the ownership of the Macquarie European Infrastructure Fund. BBIP spokesman Steven Lowry said: ‘Wightlink is a strong and stable company with the opportunity to grow and develop. We are delighted to be the new owners of the largest cross-Solent ferry operator and are committed to investing in the business and supporting the management team’s focus on safety and improving customer service.’

Chief executive Russell Kew, chief operating officer John Burrows and their management team remain in charge. Wightlink run four car ferries from Portsmouth to Fishbourne and three on the Western Solent from Lymington to Yarmouth, although one of the latter is switching to Portsmouth. Two catamarans also carry passengers on a service from Portsmouth to Ryde.
