Second 18,000TEU boxboat arrives

The world’s third largest container line CMA CGM recently took delivery of CMA CGM Georg Forster, one of a series of vessels constructed by Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries at their shipyard on Geoje Island. The new vessel was officially handed over on 2 June.

Measuring 398m by 54m, CMA CGM Georg Forster is the Group’s second 18,000TEU class vessel. The series will comprise six vessels, three of which will be built by Samsung and the other three in China. All will be named after famous explorers.

This gigantic vessel has a capacity of 17,722TEU. According to the company, if all its containers were placed end to end they would total the distance between the German cities of Hamburg and Hannover.

The vessel’s length is greater than the height of the Empire State Building, and she is wider than an Olympic swimming pool. She is named after the famous 18th century German travel writer Georg Forster, who was part of James Cook’s expedition. Forster is also considered to be one of the founders of anthropology.
