BigRoll module carriers to use Wärtsilä

BigRoll Shipping, a joint venture between BigLift Shipping and RollDock Shipping of the Netherlands, is utilising Wärtsilä’s VGP-2013-compliant propulsion package for all four MC class module carriers it is having built in China, with the first of the ships, BigRoll Barentsz, expected to be delivered before the end of the year.

The propulsion equipment will include Wärtsilä main engines, Wärtsilä tunnel thrusters and Wärtsilä controllable pitch propeller systems, all capable of operating with Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs).

This feature will allow the 173m by 42m heavylifters to operate freely in US coastal waters, including Alaska.

BigRoll Barentsz will be followed by sistership BigRoll Bering early next year, with BigRoll Baffin and BigRoll Beaufort to be delivered in 2017. All of the 21,000dwt Dutch vessels will have Finnish Swedish 1A Ice classification and are being fitted for DP2 notation. JS
