COMPANY NEWS: NORDEN enlarges fleet

Established in 1871, Dampskibssel-skabet NORDEN A/S is one of Denmark’s oldest internationally operating shipping companies and also one of Europe’s largest commodity carriers. As of the third quarter of this year it was operating a mixed fleet of owned and chartered tonnage totalling 138 dry cargo ships and 45 tankers.

In addition, it had 18 vessels on order: 12 bulk carriers and six tankers. To make room for some of these ships, it has recently sold two Handysize bulk carriers for around $42 million. The company’s Handysize and Post-Panamax ships have been operated by the NORDEN Handysize Pool and NORDEN Post-Panamax Pool, which also operate a number of vessels from Interorient Navigation Co of Cyprus.

NORDEN’s product tankers are operated through the Norient Product Pool, which is managed by the 50 per cent owned Norient Product Pool ApS. The Danish company’s latest ship is the 37,000dwt bulker Nord Mumbai, completed in August by Vietnam’s Hyundai-Vinashin Shipyard.
