Ship repair: Servicing the world’s largest

In late June Damen Shiprepair Brest (France) returned the Ultra Large Crude Carrier (ULCC) TI Europe, presently the largest vessel in the world, to her owners, EURONAV (Belgium), after successfully completing a full technical survey and service on the ship.

Jos Goris, Managing Director of Damen Shiprepair Brest, said: ‘We were pleased with this order from a company like EURONAV. Damen Shiprepair Brest has not seen a ULCC customer for a technical survey in a long time. We are delighted that EURONAV trusted us to have the required expertise to handle such a special vessel.’

The sheer size of the vessel represented a considerable challenge in itself, with the yard applying more than 46,000m² of silicon paint. Such vessels are easily handled in its largest dry dock which, at 420m by 80m, is one of the biggest in Europe. In the past year Damen Shiprepair Brest has serviced more than 50 vessels.
