More LNG-fuelled ships for CMA CGM

Marseille-headquartered CMA CGM has taken delivery of the 30,901dwt CMA CGM Mermaid as the first in a series of ten LNG-fuelled 2,000TEU container feeder ships it is having built by South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.

All of the vessels measure 204.2m by 29.6m and make use of LNG storage tanks of 1,053m3 capacity housed ahead of the funnel, while the navigation bridge is set fully forward.

Propulsion is provided by a 12-megawatt MAN main engine equipped with an alternator coupled to the propeller shaft.

For testing purposes, a hydrogen fuel cell with an energy capacity of 1MW is to be installed on the final ship of the series, due to be handed over by the beginning of next year. All ten vessels will be employed to carry cargo on feeder routes, mainly in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. JS
