AKER ICEbreaker: Oblique icebreaker design

Finland’s Aker Arctic is following up its ARC 100 oblique icebreaker design (see SM, Feb), which is currently under construction for employment in the Baltic Sea, with a larger and stronger version which will have 2.5 times the bollard pull of, and measure 22m longer than, the original vessel.

Two engines of 8,000kW and two of 4,000kW will generate a total of 24,000kW giving a bollard pull of 190 tons. Although a customer for the latest design has yet to be announced, the original ARC 100 vessel is close to being completed by Russia’s JSC Yantar facility and Helsinki’s Arctech yard for operation by the Russian Ministry of Transport starting in 2014.
