New Chinese research ship delivered

On 26 December 2024, Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) delivered the new research ship Tan Suo San (Exploration No 3) to the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

This vessel is China’s first comprehensive scientific research ship capable of global deep-sea exploration and ice manned deep-diving support, even in polar regions during the summer. It will be operated by the CAS’ Institute of Deep-Sea Science and Engineering.

Tan Suo San measures 104m in length and 19.7m (65ft) in beam, has a displacement of approximately 10,000 tonnes, and accommodates a crew of 80.

Its electric propulsion system includes two ABB azimuthing podded thrusters, providing a maximum speed of 16 knots and a range of 15,000 nautical miles.

The bow and stern are reinforced for two-way icebreaking at a speed of two knots, allowing navigation in icy areas.

The vessel completed sea trials in October, which involved 30 categories of tests, including assessments of speed, manoeuvrability, and underwater radiated noise. The results met or exceeded the original design parameters.
