ISLE OF WIGHT: Wightlink count cost of legal battles

Although successful in the latest round of its long-running court battles with Lymington River Association over plans for the development of the town’s ferry terminal and berth, Wightlink has been left with a massive legal bills.

A Planning Inquiry in 2011 gave consent for Wightlink to carry out berth improvements in Lymington River, but the LRA applied for a Judicial Review, which the High Court threw out in May as the appeal was ruled out of time.

Chief executive Russell Kew said: ‘Wightlink has had to invest more than £3.5 million simply to defend plans and decisions which have consistently been ruled appropriate. When added to the investment of £1.5 million we have made in berth works and £20 million in vessels, this underlines our commitment to Lymington, Yarmouth and the Isle of Wight in general.’
