The vessel Charm C initiated a new container service at the Port of Gothenburg on 31 March, marking the beginning of the Gemini global liner network by Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. This network aims to enhance punctuality and minimize disruptions by reducing the number of direct port calls for ocean-going vessels and relying on dedicated shuttle vessels for high-frequency connections.
The Gemini setup is described as a significant innovation in container shipping, aiming to benefit import and export industries. The Port of Gothenburg is the only Swedish port included in this service, reinforcing its role as a hub for the Scandinavian market.
Charm C, with a capacity of 2,500 TEU, will operate weekly at APM Terminals in Gothenburg, connecting with ports like Wilhelmshaven and Bremerhaven. From these ports, cargo will be transferred to ocean-going vessels heading to destinations in Asia, the Middle East, India, and North America. Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd aim to provide high-quality, reliable services under the Gemini system.
Additionally, Maersk has introduced two services linking Gothenburg to Bremerhaven and Bremerhaven-Hamburg-Gdansk, using three vessels with capacities of up to 6,000 TEU to complement the Gemini network.
