Viking and Fincantieri Announce Hydrogen-Powered Cruise Ship

On 8 April 2025 Viking® and Fincantieri announced Viking Libra, the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship capable of zero emissions.

Currently under construction at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard, Viking Libra is scheduled for delivery in late 2026.

The company’s subsequent ocean ship, Viking Astrea, also under construction, is set for delivery in 2027 and will similarly feature hydrogen propulsion.

Classified as a small ship like all Viking ocean vessels, Viking Libra will have a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300 tons. It will feature 499 staterooms, accommodating 998 guests.

Despite being part of Viking’s ocean fleet, Viking Libra will be distinct with its hybrid propulsion system, which combines liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells.

This technology enables zero-emission navigation, granting access to environmentally sensitive areas. Its state-of-the-art propulsion, developed by Fincantieri subsidiary Isotta Fraschini Motori, will produce up to six megawatts of power.

Viking Chairman and CEO Torstein Hagen emphasized the company’s dedication to sustainability, highlighting the investment in hydrogen as a true zero-emission solution.

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO of Fincantieri, praised the collaboration, stating that the Viking Libra represents a commitment to shaping sustainable maritime transport.

Viking has also announced contracts for two additional ocean ships to be delivered in 2031, with an option for two more by 2033.

By 2028, the company expects to have 110 river ships, and by 2031, 23 ocean and expedition ships, reinforcing Viking’s long-term growth and leadership in experiential travel.
