Research vessel Oscar Dyson to be upgraded

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has awarded a $95.4 million contract to JAG Alaska Inc., based in Seward, to carry out extensive upgrades on the research vessel Oscar Dyson.

Following the 2026 field season, the ship will undergo a year-long overhaul, with the goal of returning to service for the 2028 field season.

Commissioned in 2005, Oscar Dyson plays a central role in NOAA’s data collection for Alaskan and Arctic fisheries, especially for managing Alaska pollock stocks.

Planned upgrades include a new propulsion system with Tier 4 variable-speed generators, improved air conditioning, and advanced onboard technology to enhance fuel efficiency, operational safety, and research capabilities.

Additional improvements include replacing pumps, cranes, and radars, as well as increasing crew comfort with more single-occupancy cabins.

To maintain survey operations during the upgrade, NOAA is modifying the vessel Bell M. Shimada with cold-weather gear suitable for Alaska.

Both Alaska senators praised the investment, highlighting the importance of sustaining marine research, supporting the local economy, and strengthening NOAA’s long-term scientific mission.

NOAA operates 15 research vessels worldwide, staffed by a blend of commissioned officers and civilian mariners.
