NEWBUILD: First Triple-E named

On 14 June Mærsk Line’s first Triple-E vessel was named at a ceremony at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering yard in Okpo, South Korea. Although her name was widely known in industry circles before the unveiling, the ceremony marked the first time the Mærsk had officially confirmed the name, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, the former AP Møller-Mærsk group CEO, who passed away in April 2012 aged 98.

Mærsk Line CEO, Søren Skou, began the ceremony by welcoming guests and recounting the tradition of naming ceremonies in Mærsk’s history. The vessel was named by Ane Mærsk Mc‑Kinney Uggla, youngest daughter of Emma and Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller.

With a declared capacity of 18,270teu, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller takes the accolade as the world’s largest container vessel. Maersk ordered 20 such vessels in 2011 at a cost of $1.9billion, and five are due for delivery in 2013. AM
