NETHERLANDS NAVY: One-stop versatility

Damen’s Galati shipyard in Romania has completed the construction of the future HNLMS Karel Doorman (A833). The highly versatile Joint Logistics Support Ship was subsequently towed to Vlissingen in the Netherlands for final fitting out. With a fully loaded displacement of 28,246 tonnes, the JLSS will become the largest vessel in the Dutch fleet when commissioned in 2014. Her primary roles will be logistic support, strategic sealift and support of land-based forces.

In her at-sea replenishment role, she will be able to service two ships with fuel, water and solids at the same time. For sea-basing, she has a flight deck large enough to operate two Chinook helicopters simultaneously and a hangar able to accommodate six medium-sized helicopters. She will also carry two landing craft and provide up to 2,000 lane metres for vehicle parking or container storage, servicedby a ro-ro arrangement via a rear quarter ramp.
