FLEET REVIEW: Centenary gathering

The Royal Australian Navy has hosted an International Fleet Review to mark the nation’s first fleet entry into Sydney Harbour on 4 October 1913. The highlight of the event, which took place between 3 and 11 October, was a procession of 19 Royal Australian Navy vessels into Sydney Harbour, led by the fourth HMAS Sydney.

The rare spectacle echoed the events of a century before, when a column of warships, comprising the battlecruiser Australia, cruisers Encounter and Melbourne, and the destroyers Warrego, Parramatta and Yarra, sailed in formation into the famous haven led by the light cruiser and first HMAS Sydney.

The ten-day event was attended by 18 foreign warships from 17 nations, along with 16 naval and civilian Tall Ships visitors. The UK was represented by the Type 45 HMS Daring, on her second operational deployment.
