NYK orders LPG dual-fuel tankers

Japan’s NYK Line has ordered its first two liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) dual-fuelled gas carriers from compatriot builder Kawasaki Heavy Industries for delivery late next year.

To measure 230m by 37.2m, each ship will have a cargo capacity of 84,000m3 and an LPG fuel capacity of 2,500 cubic metres in twin tanks on deck.

The two vessels will comply with IMO 2020 sulfur limits and EEDI phase 3 requirements for CO2 reduction.

When using LPG as fuel the tankers’ exhaust gas will contain at least 85 per cent less sulfur oxide (SOx) and 15 per cent less carbon dioxide (CO2) than conventional tankers of the same size burning fuel oil.
