Alaska fast ferries for Spain

Spain’s Servicios y Concesiones Maritimas Ibicencas (SCMI) has purchased the fast ferries Chenega and Fairweather from the Alaska Department of Transportation for $5.2 million with the intention of refurbishing the 32-knot vessels for service between Spain and the island of Ibiza.

Both craft measured 235ft in length and can carry up to 210 passengers and approximately 30 vehicles.

They are powered by four diesel engines driving four water jets and were built in 2004 and 2006 by the Derecktor Shipyard in Bridgeport, Connecticut but performed poorly in Alaska’s rough waters and proved too expensive to operate.
