World’s first marine carbon capture unit to enter service

Dutch maritime technology company Value Maritime is partnering with compatriot feeder container ship owner, Visser Shipping and operator X-Press Feeders, part of Singapore-based Sea Consortium, in what will be the world’s first shipboard carbon-capture system.

The CO2 Capture Module and CO2 Battery, due to be installed by the end of the year to the 1,036 TEU container ship NORDICA, will form part of the scrubber unit, capturing CO2 from the vessel’s exhaust, storing it onboard in containers, with the CO2 being sold for industrial use.

It is intended, the CO2 collected from the 152-metre-long vessel will be offloaded during scheduled calls at Rotterdam Short Sea Terminal, with the product being used to help crop growth in greenhouses in the Rotterdam area.
