CONTAINER SHIP: Another Explorer arrives

On 28 October 2010 the DP World Container Terminal in Southampton played host to CMA CGM’s latest 13,830TEU explorer class container vessel CMA CGM Magellan, which called as part of her maiden repositioning voyage from the Far East.

Named after the 15th century Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, the vessel was completed by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Engineering (DSME), of South Korea, and is the fifth vessel in a series of eight currently being built for the French operator. The new vessel is 366m long, 150,269gt, and is the largest UK-registered vessel, a record she shares with her sister vessel CMA CGM Corte Real, which was delivered earlier this year. CMA CGM currently has 36 vessels registered in the UK which, at 2.25 million gross tonnes, represent approximately 13 per cent of the tonnage of the UK fleet.

CMA CGM Magellan and her sisters share a new design, which separates the accommodation and engine room, with the bridge and accommodation further forward to allow for greater visibility, and maximises cargo space, with the engine and funnel further aft.
