BULKER: Ecoships’ eco design

Ecoships, the technical ship management arm of London-based Newport Shipping Group, has introduced a new bulk carrier design, the Greenlotus 32, which is centred on a 32,500dwt geared, wide-hatched Handysize bulk carrier that will be able to meet existing and future CO2, NOx, and SOx emissions regulations.

The 170.9m by 27m ship has been optimised for energy-efficient operation using computational fluid dynamics and finite element analysis in its design engineering. The vessel will also feature built-in technology forvoyage and weather routing as well as trim optimisation.

A service speed of 14 knots will be provided by a de-rated, Tier III-compliant MAN B&W SG50ME-B9 two-stroke main engine driving a large-diameter fixed-pitch propeller. This will give a heavy fuel oil consumption rate of just 15.6 tonnes per day at 14 knots and 7.6 tonnes per day at 11 knots.

Compared to the daily fuel oil consumption of similar sized Handysizecargo vessel designs, the Greenlotus 32 is expected to generate daily fuel savings of more than $6,500 on a bunker price of $650/tonne, while operating at the higher speed.
