Veterans take Yorkshire Belle cruise out of Bridlington

After the opening of a memorial to the loss of the first Yorkshire Belle in July, a trip on the current boat which bears that name will take place by the military veterans of Bridlington to present the owners with a commemorative photograph of the new crew standing at the opening as a gift from the Royal Naval Association.

All nine crew died when Yorkshire Belle sank after a mine explosion in 1941 and RNA member, Richard M. Jones, is making it his mission to make sure this is not forgotten by writing about the life and loss of such an iconic Bridlington boat.

Anyone with information on the first Yorkshire Belle can contact Mr Jones at shipwreckdata@yahoo.co.uk

Anybody wishing to join the cruise on Monday 15 August at 5.30pm can turn up on the evening, tickets £12, for the hour and half cruise around the Bay.

Mr Jones is also set for a book launch on Thursday 18 August 2022 at Bridlington Central Library. His new volume, Around the World in Shipwreck Adventures, his 18th book, tells the story of his journeys around the globe looking at wrecked ships, maritime marvels and historic relics, this account of his quest to highlight some of the forgotten tragedies and fascinating wrecks takes him to the Caribbean, Indian Ocean, Persian Gulf, Mediterranean and of course the Yorkshire Coast.

With countless shipwrecks off the east coast it is inevitable that divers would recover relics and the history of these vessels would be documented and tell their stories, but what of the ones that are abandoned? What of the boilers on Reighton beach and the machinery laid at Cayton Bay?

What heroic rescues were carried out only to be overshadowed by other events?

All will be told at the library, where copies of the new book will be sold at a discount price and signed by the author.
