Chemical tanker: Latest Wärtsilä design

Finland’s Wärtsilä has introduced its SK 5054 Mk.II enhanced design for a chemical and oil products tanker as a further development of its successful SK 5054 design. The original design has been used for more than 60 vessels which are in operation, but the updated version incorporates new technologies, particularly the use of gas as a marine fuel. The latest design version also offers a 12 per cent increase in energy efficiency over the original and incorporates an efficient cargo-handling arrangement.

There is also a strong focus on crew safety and ease of maintenance aboard. According to Riku-Pekka Hägg, Vice President, Wärtsilä Ship Design, the SK 5054 MkII version effectively ‘raises the bar’ in terms of innovative designs that emphasise operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.
