The Swedish sail training ship Götheborg came up the Thames on 8 August 2022.

She is a 58m (190ft) replica of a Swedish full-rigged East Indiaman is pictured visiting the Upper Pool of London and sailing through the open span of Tower Bridge early in the morning.

The original Götheborg ran aground off Gothenburg harbour in 1738 after almost completing a 30 month voyage from China. Fortunately all hand were saved and her valuable cargo of tea, porcelain, silk and spices was salvaged.

She is following in the historic footsteps of the original ship from the 18th century, with the purpose of the expedition being to promote trade relations in Europe and Asia.

The ship will sail in Europe in 2022, stay in the Mediterranean during the winter, and continue to Asia in March 2023. In September 2023, the ship will reach the expedition’s end destination Shanghai.
