PORT NEWS: French port expansion

The Ports of Normandy Authority is partway through a €40 million expansion program at the port of Cherbourg in connection with offshore wind farm and other marine renewable energy developments in the English Channel. Underwater rock blasting and dredging has already been completed, and a 320m extension to the Quai des Flamards terminal is due for completion at the end of 2014 to provide a working quay 680m in length. Road and rail access to the quayside is also being redirected. Thanks to a load capacity of 15 tonnes per square metre, this expansion will permit the shipment of heavy cargoes associated with renewable energies. KM
