As well as being a busy ferry port, Belfast is the main point of entry for much of Northern Ireland’s trade and is the country’s principal maritime gateway, handling around 70 per cent of the country’s sea-borne trade each year.

Roy Thompson’s photographs show some of the cargo vessels that have visited the port.

The 2009-built cargo vessel EIT Palmina (12,679gt) in the Victoria Channel, inbound for the windfarm berth on 22 March 2013. The Antigua & Barbuda-flagged vessel, formerly Hyundai Britannia and Scan Britannia, was built by Rolandwerft Berne, Germany and has two 350-ton capacity cranes.

A regular caller is the 2005-built feeder vessel Eudurance (7,642gt), pictured inbound at Victoria Channel on 26 November 2017. She has been running from Antwerp to Belfast for the last two years.

The small products tanker Bro Globe (2001) in Musgrave Channel departing Oil Berth 1 in May 2009. The 4,107gt vessel is now operating as Tun Globe.

The 1991-built general cargo vessel Novatrans (2,561gt) heading down the Victoria Channel, inbound for Stormont Wharf, February 2017. The 88m vessel is homeported in Delfzijl and was bringing grain from Teesport.
