Hybrid cable layer to be built by Vard

Fincantieri’s Norwegian-headquartered Vard subsidiary has been contracted to build a 95m by 21.5m hybrid subsea cable laying vessel with a cable carousel capacity of 4,500 tonnes for Denmark’s NCT Offshore.

Designed by Vard Design in close collaboration with NCT Offshore, the hull of the new ship will be built at Vard Tulcea in Romania while final outfitting will take place at one of Vard’s shipyards in Norway.

The vessel will be fitted with two main cable tanks as well as a T-ROV hangar, walk-to-work gangway system and several deck cranes along with single-cabin accommodation for up to 60 people.

A complete Vard Electro SeaQ power and control package, encompassing batteries, switchboards, and electrical shore connection, will be fitted to the ship to give a reduction in fuel consumption while increasing operability using a DP2 position-keeping system.

The new vessel’s primary employment will consist of inter-array cable installation along with cable repair/maintenance and fiber optic cable installation.
