Ore carrier Sohar Max to gain rotor sails

Brazilian mining giant Vale S.A. plans to have five rotor sails from Anemoi Marine Technologies installed on its 400,315dwt Valemax ore carrier Sohar Max, owned by Omani shipowner Asyad.

The tilt-down rotors. to be powered by small electric motors, will have a diameter of 5m and stand 35m tall.

They are expected to reduce fuel consumption by at least 6 per cent annually and cut CO2 emissions by up to 3,000 tons per year.

The rotors, which harness the power of cross winds to provide additional forward thrust, will be built and installed in China within the second quarter of 2024.
