SHIPYARD NEWS: Tyneside yard completes ferry refit

The A&P Type shipyard has just completed the month-long refit of the P&O ferry Pride of York (1987/31,785gt, ex-Norsea), which left the Tyneside yard after four weeks to resume her role on the Hull-Zeebrugge route. The ship arrived at Hebburn in late January and, after a delay caused by high winds, was docked in early February ready for the refit work to begin.

The scope of the work more than doubled during the time the ship was in dock, with additional steel replacement work required. At the peak of the work, more than 150 A&P employees and many subcontractors were working on the ship to complete the work in the shortest possible time. Pride of York is the only ferry to dock on the Tyne this year, but contracts from P&O have previously been won.

This year has seen A&P Tyne busy, with up to 600 staff working on a series of contracts, including ongoing fabrication work on the new RN aircraft carrier. The yard has also won contracts to build subsea structures for the Usan oilfield off Nigeria.
