SHIP DESIGN: Model tested

Germany’s Hamburg Ship Model Basin (HSVA) has been utilised to test an optimised model of a 9,000TEU container ship being developed by FutureShip, a subsidiary of Germanischer Lloyd and the Marine Design & Research Institute of China. Shipowners Schulte of Germany and Costamare of Greece had requested the design review in order to optimise the ship’s efficiency. As a result, it has been determined that a smaller main engine can be installed in the vessel, thus reducing fuel consumption by more than 10 per cent.
