Production on the Magnus Platform was shut down for approximately 24 hours on 22 April following contact between the Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel (ERRV) Grampian Defender and the installation. Although an investigation into the incident is ongoing, it is understood that the ERRV lost power before drifting and colliding with one of the platform’s support legs.
Damage to the BP-operated Platform is thought to be minimal. However, there was damage to the bow and main mast of Grampian Defender. As a result of the collision, the vessel had to break off from her standby and support role and transit to the port of Fraserburgh in north-east Scotland for an emergency dry-docking.
Purpose-built in 2002 as a Class B ERRV, Grampian Defender has been designed to operate in the harsh environment of the North Sea.
