NEW LIFEBOAT: First Ireland Tamar named by President

The first of the new 16m Tamar class lifeboats to serve in Ireland was named and dedicated at the busy fishing port of Kilmore Quay in Wexford by the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, at a ceremony on 15 June 2011.

The ceremony, which took place under a marquee on the quayside, was attended by hundreds of well-wishers eager to hear the President and watch as the bottle of champagne broke over the bows of the new lifeboat. The new boat was funded from the legacy of Mrs Mary Weeks, of Surrey, who passed away in 2006. She met her husband while on a cruise off the west coast of Scotland on a ship named Killarney, hence her wish for the new lifeboat to be so named. The RNLI volunteer crew at Kilmore Quay have undertaken comprehensive training on the new boat since she arrived at the station.
