FISHING VESSEL: Trawlers in London

From 6 to 12 June the state-of-the-art pelagic Peterhead trawler Lunar Bow (PD265) was moored alongside HMS Belfast. The visit was timed to coincide with Seafarers’ Awareness Week, whichwas organised by the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen and the Scottish Pelagic Fishermen’s Association.

Powered by a single Wärtsilä 12V32 engine of 8,158bhp, Lunar Bow measures 69m in length, and is 2,233gt. She was delivered by Simek of Flekkefjord, Norway in 2008. Her owners, Lunar Fishing, operate large pelagic vessels catching herring and mackerel,as well as whitefish vessels.

Earlier in the month another very Peterhead-registered vessel, Amity II (PD 177), also came up the Thames. Built in Denmark in 1989, she fishes for langoustine and she has a starring role, with her skipper, Jimmy Buchan, in the BBC’s Trawlermen series.
