PORT NEWS: Changes at Yarmouth

Work is under way on modifications to Great Yarmouth’s outer harbour to address the swell problem which has dogged the port. The 200m-wide entrance to the harbour is to be reduced by 50m by extending the breakwater arms, which will be densified and heightened with extra rock. Hard rubber cone fenders, which were designed for the expected larger ships, will be replaced with Yokohama airbag fenders. The operators Eastport state that the main issue is that smaller vessels were using the harbour than had been originally envisaged.

However, one coaster that pays regular visits to the remaining old river berths at Great Yarmouth is the very smart Dolfijn, which delivers regular supplies of sawn timber from Helsingborg, Sweden. The vessel is a regular sight at Yarmouth and on some voyages also visits Felixstowe.
