Conflicting answers to the Mystery Ship from July. Which one is right?
• Based purely on the fact that it is a ship from the Blue Funnel Fleet under Sydney bridge, I am surmising that the Mystery Ship is Aeneas (1), one of triplets, built in 1910 by Workman Clark in Belfast. The vessel’s maiden voyage took her from Glasgow to Australia, around the Cape. She became a troopship, but on 2 July 1940 she was strafed and bombed off Start Point and was abandoned as she sank.

• The ship passing under the Sydney Harbour Bridge is the Blue Funnel cargo liner Anchises (10,046grt). She was built for the Ocean Steam Ship Co (BF) by Workman Clark & Co, Belfast in 1911 and served as a troopship during World War I. She resumed commercial service in 1922. On 27 February 1941 she was bombed north-west of Ireland and abandoned by all on board except for 33 crew members. Peter Sommerville
