ROYAL NAVY: A piece of the puzzle

A&P Tyne has delivered on the first part of its £55 million contract for the QEC project. The construction of Centre Block 03, part of the hangar and flight deck structure, was completed five weeks ahead of schedule. The module, which is 63m long, 40m wide and 6m deep, weighs 3,000 tonnes and took 18 months to build. The block was shipped to Rosyth on 11 September for work to begin on constructing Lower Block 02 Double Bottom Units and Centre Block 03 for the second QE class ship. Among the workforce at Hebburn are some of the same men who helped build the recently-departed Ark Royal.

Meanwhile, the largest prefabricated section built to date safely arrived at Rosyth on 20 August after a four-day transit from Glasgow. The 8,000-tonne mid-section of the hull was transported to the assembly dock by the 12,727gt barge AMT Trader.
