NCL: Newbuilds Ordered By Norwegian Cruise Lines

Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway are the names of two newbuilds being ordered by Norwegian Cruise Lines. These names were chosen in a competition held in conjunction with the newspaper USA Today, which attracted nearly a quarter of a million entries. The steel for the first vessel, which is a new class, was cut on 20 September at the German shipyard of Meyer Werft, Papenburg.

The first steel block will then be placed in Meyer Werft’s giant covered building dock next April, with construction after that expected to take a year. The new ships are scheduled for delivery in April 2013 and April 2014 respectively.

The ships will be smaller than the line’s 4,200-passenger Norwegian Epic (2010/155,873), each of 144,017gt and capacity of approximately 4,000 berths. The winners of the competition will be invited to Norwegian Breakaway’s christening ceremony.
