First Carnival newbuild scrapped

After a short spell of cruising for Chinese owner HNA Cruises and a further period of lay-up, Henna appears to have been sold to Chinese breakers. She was built by Kockums at Malmø in 1986 as Carnival Cruises Lines’ Jubilee, the third new ship for the then still-young cruise operator.

As larger tonnage came on stream she was transferred to P&O Cruises Australia as Pacific Sun in 2004, but by 2012 was surplus to requirements once again and was sold to HNA Cruises. Perhaps surprisingly, in view of the growth of the Chinese cruise market, she did not meet with success, and as a result spent some time laid up.

She is survived by the first of the Carnival new builds, Tropicale, currently sailing for the Peaceboat Organisation as Ocean Dream, the second, Holiday, now in service with Cruise and Maritime Voyages as Magellan and the fourth, Celebration, now Bahamas Celebration with Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line.
