Tthe next generation of Expedition Cruising

Damen Shipyards Group, with Expedition Voyage Consultants Ltd and Denmark’s Knud E. Hansen, has designed a 115-passenger expedition cruise ship for exploring in both polar and tropical regions.

The vessel would reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by employing a hybrid propulsion system using IMO Tier III compliant medium-speed engines and a PTI-PTO variable frequency drive.

The Polar Class 6 ship, which would have a service speed of 16 knots, would be capable of 30 days of autonomous cruising while also complying with SOLAS’ Safe-Return-to-Port requirements.

Depending upon owner requirements, an energy storage battery system could be installed that would be capable of providing supplementary power for silent sailing operations.

The Damen Expedition Cruise Vessel has been designed for expedition operations in both remote polar and tropical regions. The vessel’s Polar Class 6 compliance and 30 days autonomous cruising capability ensure she is globally capable and able to tackle challenging, far-reaching itineraries.

With approximately 1,100 square metres of public space and 2,500 square metres  of outside deck, there will be sufficient space for 115 passengers and a +200 pax design will be developed soon.
